Rhythm is a fundamental aspect of music to which western music education rarely gives the attention it deserves. Mastering such a tool can benefit greatly the development of the musical perception of not only percussionists, but also performers and composers.

        This class is accessible even to complete beginners as it uses the rhythmic system of south India (Carnatic music) and thus requires zero prior knowledge of music theory and western notation. We will start with an in-depth training on the syllables (ta ka di mi etc.) and having that as a base, we will proceed with:

 

 •  accent displacement exercises

 •  polyrhythm

 •  understanding tuplets

 •  switching of perceived downbeat

 •  analysis of rhythmically innovative music

 •  analysis of rhythmic devices that you can use on your music
